The Nelson Tasman region calls itself the Heart of Biking for good reason - it offers some of New Zealand's best cycling. There's something for everyone, from hard core mountain bikers to urban cruisers and everything in between. There are plenty of rides in this region to keep you coming back year after year.
Just ten minutes ride from the centre of town, Codgers Track offers a relatively easy introduction to Nelson’s off-road options and provides a connection to the renowned Dun Mountain Trail. The climb follows a historic tramline route and features both interesting relics and breathtaking scenery.
Further afield, Kahurangi National Park’s Heaphy Track is open to cyclists from May to September and is a 'must ride'. The single-track trail takes 2–3 days over 78 diverse kilometres.
At Kaiteriteri, the outstanding 180 hectare Mountain Bike Park caters for riders of all levels. The Tasman Great Taste Trail goes right past so you can ride there all the way from Nelson city if you wish!
The developing Tasman Great Taste Trail takes in the best of the region over a 175 km loop from Nelson. It's mostly wide, flat and off road, with just a few hills to add some challenge.
The signposted pathway passes through picturesque farmland, vineyards, orchards, berry farms, small villages and alongside the beautiful coastline. Riders can enjoy boutique shops, cafes, wineries, breweries, artist studios and roadside stalls.
Shuttle transport can be easily organised so the trail can be explored in stages and there are a number of biking/cycling tour companies that provide guided and self-guided tours and bike rentals.
If you are interested in enjoying a scenic bike ride with your child, you should consider buying a Do Little bike seat online, as they're a fantastic design and perfect for kids aged 18 months to 7 years of old.
Nelson city is one of New Zealand’s most cycle-friendly places to visit.
